What Size Chandelier for Your Dining Table and Ceiling Height

For a dining table, choose a chandelier roughly half to two-thirds as wide as the table, and hang it so the bottom sits about 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop. For a fixture in an open room, add the room's length and width in feet and read the total as inches of diameter. Ceiling height decides how long the drop can be, so measure that before you pick a style.

The numbers below are general guidance used by many lighting designers, not strict rules. Your room, furniture and taste still matter, and it is worth marking the size on paper or with tape before you order.

Step 1: Size the chandelier to your dining table

A chandelier that is too wide crowds the table and gets bumped by people standing up. One that is too small looks lost. A good starting range is one half to two thirds of the table's width. Keep the fixture at least 15–20 cm (6–8 in) inside the table edge on every side, so people can lean back or stand without hitting it.

Table width Suggested chandelier diameter
80 cm (31 in) 40–55 cm (16–22 in)
90 cm (35 in) 45–60 cm (18–24 in)
100 cm (39 in) 50–65 cm (20–26 in)
110 cm (43 in) 55–75 cm (22–30 in)

For a long rectangular table, a linear or horizontal chandelier often looks better than a round one. As a guide, aim for about half to two thirds of the table's length. A 180 cm table suits a fixture around 90–120 cm long, and a 220 cm table suits one around 110–145 cm.

Step 2: Size it to the room

When the chandelier hangs in an open living room, hallway or bedroom instead of over a table, use the room itself. Add the room's length and width in feet, and read the total as inches of fixture diameter. A 12 ft by 14 ft room adds up to 26, so a fixture about 26 in (roughly 65 cm) across is a sensible starting point.

Visual weight matters as much as width. An open ring or a slim line of light looks lighter than a dense cluster of glass or crystal of the same diameter, so a lighter design can go a little larger in a small room.

Step 3: Match the drop to your ceiling height

Over a dining table, the bottom of the chandelier should sit roughly 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop. In a space people walk through, such as a hallway or open living area, keep the lowest point at least about 210 cm (7 ft) above the floor. The table below gives starting points for the gap between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture.

Ceiling height Gap above tabletop (approx.) Notes
240 cm (8 ft) 75 cm (30 in) Choose a shallow or semi-flush style
270 cm (9 ft) 80 cm (32 in) Most designs fit comfortably
300 cm (10 ft) 85–90 cm (34–36 in) Room for a taller fixture
Above 300 cm 90 cm (36 in) or more Consider a long drop or a multi-tier design

Check how much adjustment the product allows. Many of our chandeliers have a height adjustable ceiling rod or wire, which lets you fine-tune the drop on the day you hang it. Any wiring or ceiling work should be done by a licensed electrician.

Step 4: Think about shape, light and finish

Round tables suit round or cluster chandeliers. Rectangular tables suit linear or oval shapes. Before you buy, check whether the fixture is dimmable and what bulb colour options are listed, since a dining room often benefits from lighting you can turn down in the evening. Browse the full chandelier collection or the statement pieces if you want one fixture to carry the whole room.

Our picks

These are five chandeliers from our range, with the sizes taken from each product page. Check the page for current options, finishes and bulb choices.

Circa Modern Chandelier

Concentric aluminium rings with a 100 cm overall height. Ring diameters run from 60 cm (small three-ring) to 80 cm (large three-ring and four-ring). The listing describes a height adjustable ceiling rod and dimmable LED bulbs with adjustable colour temperature, from 3000K to 6000K. A good fit for a round table about 120 cm across or wider.

Round Around Chandelier Light

A clean circular design in aluminium, offered from a two-ring version with 30 cm and 40 cm rings up to a four-ring version with a largest ring of 80 cm. The wire is height adjustable on every style, and the range of sizes makes it easy to match a smaller table or a bedroom.

Moonlight River Chandelier

Offered in five diameters from 30 cm to 80 cm, with a suspension height that adjusts up to 100 cm. Because the sizes are so varied, it works for a small breakfast table as well as a larger dining space.

Bubble Glass Cloud Chandelier

A cluster of hand-frosted glass orbs. The small version is 40 cm across by 85 cm high, and the large is 80 cm across by 120 cm high. A taller design, so it suits higher ceilings or an entryway.

Rhythm Horizontal Hanging Chandelier

A linear fixture for long tables, in lengths of about 48, 97, 145 and 200 cm, all 47 cm wide. The listing mentions dimmable LED light strips and an adjustable height ceiling wire. Match the length to roughly half to two thirds of your table.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most frequent errors are hanging the fixture too low, which blocks sightlines across the table, and choosing a width based on the room alone without checking the table. Also remember that the chandelier does not have to be centred on the room. If the table is off-centre, centre the chandelier over the table. If you are unsure about a fixture's weight or ceiling support, ask a licensed electrician or installer before you buy.

FAQ

How big should a chandelier be over a dining table?

A common guide is one half to two thirds of the table's width, kept at least 15–20 cm inside the table edge on all sides. For long tables, use a linear fixture about half to two thirds of the table's length.

How high should I hang a chandelier over a dining table?

As general guidance, the bottom of the chandelier sits about 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop. Go lower with a low ceiling and higher with a tall one, and adjust until you can see across the table comfortably.

Can I use a chandelier in a room with a low ceiling?

Yes, if you choose a shallow or semi-flush design and keep the lowest point well above head height. In walkways, aim for at least about 210 cm (7 ft) from the floor to the bottom of the fixture.

Who should install my chandelier?

Hire a licensed electrician for wiring and ceiling work. They can also confirm that your ceiling can support the fixture's weight.
