How High to Hang a Pendant Over a Kitchen Island or Table

As a general rule, hang pendants so the bottom of the shade sits about 75 to 90 cm (30 to 36 in) above a kitchen island or dining table surface. Go toward the higher end if you are tall, if the shade is large, or if the ceiling is above 2.4 m (8 ft); go toward the lower end for small, open shades. The exact number matters less than making sure nobody has to lean around the light to talk across the table.

The basic height rule, and why it works

The 75 to 90 cm range is common design guidance, not a fixed standard. At that height the light sits below most people's eye line when seated or standing at the counter, so you see the shade rather than the bare bulb, and the table or worktop gets directed light. Hang it much higher and the pendant starts to feel like a ceiling light; hang it much lower and it blocks sightlines and risks knocks from tall guests.

Measure from the top surface of the island or table to the lowest point of the shade, not from the floor and not to the ceiling canopy. It helps to have a second person hold the fixture (or a cardboard cut-out of its size) at a few heights while you stand and sit at the spot.

Adjusting for ceiling height

Standard guidance assumes a ceiling of roughly 2.4 m (8 ft). For taller rooms, many designers raise the pendant a little for each extra 30 cm (1 ft) of ceiling height, commonly around 7 cm (3 in). That keeps the light in proportion with the room. The table below is a starting point to adjust by eye.

Ceiling height Bottom of shade above surface Notes
2.4 m (8 ft) 75 to 80 cm (30 to 32 in) Keep shades compact so they do not crowd the room
2.7 m (9 ft) 80 to 85 cm (32 to 34 in) Works for most sizes of shade
3.0 m (10 ft) 85 to 90 cm (34 to 36 in) Larger shades or clusters look balanced here
3.4 m (11 ft) or more 90 cm (36 in) or slightly more Check sightlines from the next room

Many of our pendants come with adjustable cords, wires or rods, so you can fine-tune the drop after the fixture is up. Always check the product page for the maximum drop of the model you choose.

Island vs dining table: small differences

Over a kitchen island, you stand more often, so lean toward the higher end of the range and keep shades from hiding the person on the far side. Over a dining table, people mostly sit, so a slightly lower pendant creates a cosy pool of light, as long as you can still see faces across the table.

Width matters as well. A common guide is to keep the pendant or the whole row at least 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12 in) narrower than each end of the table or island, so there is room to move chairs and place dishes. For a rectangular surface, a long linear fixture or a row of pendants usually looks better than one small light.

How many pendants, and how far apart

As a rule of thumb, space individual pendants roughly 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 in) apart, measured centre to centre, and leave a similar or slightly larger gap before the end of the island. The shades can be bigger if you use fewer lights. The table below gives rough starting points for a standard-width island or table.

Surface length Typical layout Shade size (general guide)
Up to 120 cm (47 in) 1 large or 2 small pendants 30 to 50 cm (12 to 20 in)
150 to 180 cm (59 to 71 in) 2 or 3 pendants 25 to 40 cm (10 to 16 in)
210 to 270 cm (83 to 106 in) 3 pendants, or 1 to 2 linear lights 25 to 40 cm (10 to 16 in)

If a ceiling junction box or beam is not where you want a light, a multi-light canopy or a linear fixture can help. Any new wiring or moving of a ceiling box should be done by a licensed electrician.

Shade shape and bulb choices

Round, soft shades such as bubble lamps diffuse light and look gentle over a table. Open or glass shades spread more light and sparkle, but expose more of the bulb, so they are best kept a little higher or paired with a dimmable setup. For general tips on warmth and brightness, our guide to warm white vs cool white and our lumens-per-room guide may help. If you want to adjust the mood from dinner to cleaning-up, choose a model marked dimmable and use a compatible dimmer.

Our picks

  • Ball Bubble Pendant Lamp: a soft spherical shade in 30, 40 and 50 cm sizes (28 to 47 cm tall) with an adjustable cord. The silk-coated steel frame gives a diffused glow over a dining table.
  • Saucer Bubble Pendant Lamp: a wide, flat profile in four sizes from 30 to 60 cm across, and only 16 to 28 cm tall. Handy where you want a wide shade that does not hang far down.
  • Mirror Glass Ball Pendant Light: five sizes from 15 to 40 cm in gold, rose gold or chrome. The product page says it is dimmable with a compatible dimmer and bulb, and suggests hanging several together over an island, bar or dining table.
  • Gold Linear LED Pendant Light: a slim gold fixture with integrated dimmable LED and adjustable hanging height, designed to spread light along a dining table or island.

Quick checklist before you drill

  1. Measure the surface and mark the centre line on the ceiling.
  2. Decide the bottom-of-shade height (start at 75 to 90 cm, adjusted for ceiling height).
  3. Check the fixture's drop range, and whether you need extra cord or rod length.
  4. Stand, sit and walk around the space with the light held at that height.
  5. Have a licensed electrician do the wiring and installation.

FAQ

How high should a pendant hang over a kitchen island?

A common guideline is 75 to 90 cm (30 to 36 in) from the island surface to the bottom of the shade. Raise it slightly for tall ceilings or larger shades.

How far apart should island pendants be?

Roughly 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 in) between centres is a typical starting point. Larger shades can be spaced a little wider.

Can I change the hanging height later?

Many of our pendants have adjustable cords, wires or rods, so you can tweak the height after installation. Check the specific product page for the drop range, and see our FAQ page for other questions.

Should the pendant be as wide as the table?

No. Keep the fixture or row about 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12 in) shorter than the surface at each end so it feels balanced.
